I use wikipedia all the time for your normal everyday kind of stuff: what a compression wave is, when Falco released his last album, etc. i have never created one or added to a preexisting one, aside from this class. i had no idea the ease at which the could be updated, monitored, fixed and used in a classroom until i read this chapter. to me has always been a learning tool but i didn't see any advantage in teaching other than suggesting them as a learning resource tool.
now that i understand more on how wikies are maintained i have more faith in the quality of information. i would now feel more comfortable in recommending wikipidea as a place to start on research. depending on the school i end up teaching at i might be able to use a wiki in class for students to use as a resource. it could be an ongoing tool for my biology students with each successive class adding to the site. along the way they can add information they learned in and out of class, identify mistakes and discuss what information should be included, and links to outside resources. the next class would have the benefit of the previous class information while adding there own. i think it could help students understand how the advances in science aren't made by one person but many people working together. it is a cool tool to teach team work and compromise.
