ch. 7 blogs, wikis...

  • How does this reading impact your thinking about technology's role in teaching and learning?
I didn't know a thing about flickr before this chapter. Know i think its pretty cool. I took an ecology class and the professor used many picture from his personal collection to teach the class. He was personally connected to the material and that made learning easier for me, proof that they are here because this is what they like as apposed to what they are being paid to do. As a future science teacher i want to create a bank of photos i took to help in my teaching. Their are a million pictures of oak trees but i got pictures of 300 year old oaks that i went to see in new Orleans. the longer i live the more pictures ill have and by the time i retire i hope to use all my own photos as an aid in learning life science in school. Flicker was custom designed for me.

What will you do differently as a future teacher as a direct result of this new thinking?
I can create a class Flickr account they would have access to. they could view my photos, divided by units, and add their own, for extra credit maybe. A lot of science can be learned through pictures and captions, i have aced classes reading little else. I probably wont have a very throe account at first, but 10 or so years down the line it should be awesome.
I could use this for students who missed a class lab or forgot some of what we did. a slide show for labs can be a great resource for students. a virtual lab with the dead rat clearly labeled.

ch. 6 blogs, wikis, podcasts...

  • How does this reading impact your thinking about technology's role in teaching and learning?
I think i get the blogging I'm am doing that now, but twitter is a not quiet the same but similar. Ashton cusher can probably explain him self and anything he wants to say in 140 characters. Personally i would have a hard time explaining my thoughts in such a short medium. For personal use i wouldn't use twitter. This chapter did give some examples of how it could be used in the classroom. Their are plenty of scientists tweeting, but the information that they provide is more opinion rather than a medium for new research. If they need more perspective on a certain subject it can be  a helpful resource, but it wouldn't be my first recommendation for students to use.
Delicious is a cool tool i have been introduces to and as a teacher i can definitely see it as a useful teaching tool. Rather than have students searching for information that will be useful in the classroom i can provide them with some real solid leads. Judging the quality of a website can be difficult, i am still fooled by a well done spoof website. I can give my students a leg up, with examples of quality resources they can use and know that the content is muster.

What will you do differently as a future teacher as a direct result of this new thinking?
I will continue to add to my Delicious account. I have been a bite slow in adding links but plan on filling it out some more. As i come closer to being a teacher i will keep in mind to add sites that will be resources not just for me as a teacher , but for my future students use. At the beginning of the semester class as a teacher i will introduce them to my account as a resource they might be interested on using. Besides having the link to my account on the syllabus i will periodically point out sites that i have linked that the students will find useful depending on our unit of study. I don't plan on using twitter, but if i do i could use it as a way of keeping an open dialog with students and parents concerning the class i teach.

exit oct 21

-jigsaw approach- mixing group work in a way that takes advantage of the individuals students "expertize"
-summary frame- summarize the discussion before discussion so expectations are clear
-smart board- Computer screen &projector do not have = contrast, pay attention color (use high contrast) &size(24-36)
 - power point 6x6 rule- 6lines,6words per line
-Skype is a communication tool
-don't wait until the last min to complete an assignment, always a good tip

Chapther 5 new education system

  • How does this reading impact your thinking about technology's role in teaching and learning?
Before reading this section i thought that home schooling was only for strongly religious people. A girl i had a date with  referred to all socially inept people as "home schooled". One of my best friends was home schooled until his sophomore year in high school, when i first met him in school my friends and i would abuse that poor kid, but now were thick as thieves and he is in his 3rd year of university. I see now that home schooling takes all kinds. i am glad to see that technology has improved for these students, but i don't care for the insinuation that live teachers aren't as needed.
Using technology to learn a job is something i am familiar with. I have had a couple jobs as a hotel clerk and the training CD-Roms board me to death and i didn't learn much. it was required that i sit through them but once u work at one hotel the operating systems aren't that different. i could see how they were helpful to some and that the information they contained was not taught in high school.
I am a PBS fan, i love the Muppet's and many other "educational" programing, but it is to passive for the watcher to learn new subjects and i think a kid could get more from 10 min of one on one reading than a hour of the "electric company". TV is still the opiate of the masses.

  • What will you do differently as a future teacher as a direct result of this new thinking?
After high school i remembered how we learned about photosynthesis, but i couldn't tell you what ATP was. My science teachers gave me the tools to be a life long learner. I wont just teach facts to my students. facts are great and people are full of interesting ones, but the method for understanding is the most important part, "teach someone to fish " sort of scenario. critical thinking skills can be applied to a students life out side of class and will help them be those life long learners who know how to take advantage of the resources available to them as an adult.

chapter 5

  • How does this reading impact your thinking about technology's role in teaching and learning?

  • rss seems nice. I believe this technology has a place in teaching and learning, but a specific place. technology like this is helpful students working on an intense research project where information is currently being gathered on a subject and is updated regularly, the situation in Haiti for instance. An rss needs to be checked daily to get the proper use out of it, thats a lot. For average students in a biology class i dont think they need to be thinking about my class everyday, if they do thats awsome and i would encougage their interest, but i dont want to overwhelm students.

  • What will you do differently as a future teacher as a direct result of this new thinking?

  •  if i am teaching a class that involves the students maintaining a webblog u bettcha i am going to use an rss to moniter the students posts. i might look into an rss feed that goes directly to cell phones that the students might like to use. As a teacher i might like to use an rss for biology to keep my up on interestiong sceince news that would intest the students. i have places now i go for news that work for me and the rss system , at the moment, wouldent help me keep anymore current than i already am.

    chapter 4

  • How does this reading impact your thinking about technology's role in teaching and learning?

  • I use wikipedia all the time for your normal everyday kind of stuff:  what a compression wave is, when Falco released his last album, etc. i have never created one or added to a preexisting one, aside from this class. i had no idea the ease at which the could be updated, monitored, fixed and used in a classroom until i read this chapter. to me  has always been a learning tool but i didn't see any advantage in teaching other than suggesting them as a learning resource tool.

  • What will you do differently as a future teacher as a direct result of this new think?

  • now that i understand more on how wikies are maintained i have more faith in the quality of information. i would now feel more comfortable in recommending wikipidea as a place to start on research. depending on the school i end up teaching at i might be able to use a wiki in class for students to use as a resource. it could be an ongoing tool for my biology students with each successive class adding to the site. along the way they can add information they learned in and out of class, identify mistakes and discuss what information should be included, and links to outside resources. the next class would have the benefit of the previous class information while adding there own. i think it could help students understand how the advances in science aren't made by one person but many people working together. it is a cool tool to teach team work and compromise.
